St. Philip High School

Our school has a long & proud heritage, dating back to 1904, when the Servite Fathers established a school for boys, at the rear of the monastery & adjacent to the church.

The school building was finally ready in 1910, and opened its doors for the first time. Our school building (shown here), stayed with us throughout the years, until its closing in 1970.

The St. Philip High School building still stands today, at 3141 West Jackson Boulevard, just as it did when we attended. After the closing, in 1970, it was first occupied by OLS Elementary School & then a charter school.

Gaels Athletics

The Gaels, early in their history, were members, of the Cook County League, for only one year, and captured the league's 1911 baseball championship, before the league dissolved.

The CCL baseball title, was vacated, due to the use of 1911 players, (shown here), some of whom were also professionals.

Notice to our Guests

Due to the "overwhelming" volume of SPAM being dumped into guestbooks across the Internet, worldwide, by "SPAMBOTS," we have been forced to implement several new security measures, to protect our guestbook from unwanted entries from these "pests." We desire to keep our book in the "public" side of our web site. Should these measures fail, we will be forced, however, to employ more secure measures, even to the extent of moving it to a "private" and "user authenticated" area, where we will restrict entry to only registered and authorized users. It is not our desire to take such steps, unless forced to do so, either by "SPAMBOTS" or "malicious pranksters."

These "SPAMBOTS" automatically place unwanted, malicious, or generally inappropriate messages in "unprotected" guestbooks. Most often, but not always, these messages include links to other sites on the Internet, which can be virus infected, "spyware" infected, scams, rip-offs, and even family inappropriate. Most of these "SPAMBOT" entries seem to emanate in foreign countries, or "trackback" to sites in foreign countries. These "SPAMBOT" programs place these links, with the intent of getting these linked sites, or their own originating sites, a higher "index" position in the "search results" of the major search engines (e.g. Google, Yahoo, Bing, MSN, etc.).

-- Note: "Guestbook spamming" is a lucrative business, and while we certainly do support "free enterprise," spamming is "undesirable" in OUR guestbook! We know you will agree, and support our efforts, to keep our guestbook "SPAM Free," and "Family Safe!"

Don't worry, however, the procedures and measures we've adopted, are really quite simple for "humanoids."

Effective immediately, in order to post messages in our guestbook, you will first need to agree to conform to the Terms & Conditions for posting comments. Please read them carefully, as any entries which do not conform to these Terms & Conditions, will be removed by the "Guestmaster." Once you agree to the Terms & Conditions, please complete the form & submit for approval. Comments: I am a member of the class of 1964. St. Philip High School was a great school with great teachers. We had our own athletic center, which I included a football field, swimming pool, bowling alley and basketball gym with a running track.

I remember the tunnel to the cafeteria and standing in the football area after lunch?

I also remember Father Onderbeck parading the halls with “the Strap” before it was outlawed.

I remember Father Barnes, who taught Latin. I never heard him raise his voice, but when he entered that classroom there was dead silence.

I remember Mr.Farmer? He taught Physics and always seemed at odds with the school administration, Father Dennehy in particular.

I remember Mr. Jakula? I had him for freshman English. He was very animated and made the class very interesting. I believe he had been an attorney in a prior life.

Who can forget the legendary Clem Naughton, head basketball coach and athletic director. A real character.

Comments: I graduated in 1946. Went to Michigan state for one year. Figured I knew it all, so I went to work. I tried different jobs until I found my life\'s work, A Lineman with Local #9 IBEW. Comments: I just found out about this website and wanted to say hello to all my fellow St.Philip alumni. Thanks Rick for putting all this together. A few months ago I actually read all four of my yearbooks from cover to cover. If it wasn't for a music scholarship and playing in the band, I could not have afforded to attend, so I feel very lucky. I wonder what ever happened to Fr. LaFave. Will there be a Class of 1966, 50th reunion somewhere? All the best to everyone and feel free to drop a note. Time does go by much too fast. My wife and I retired to the Southwest corner of Colorado near Mesa Verde National Park. While it feels like a million miles away from the inner city of Chicago, I've never forgotten where I came from and all the dedicated faculty we had at St. Philip, and many of my classmates. What a talented group of students we had then not to mention parents who helped with many of our activities.

Since I participated in this event and played in a trumpet trio with Ken Wilk and Harry Poulas. It was a pleasant surprise. I attended OLS from kindergarten thru 8th Grade Graduating in 1953 Started at St Philip's in Sept of '53, but moved when our appt bldg was sold for demolishing. I remember how my mother moved us from the "cold- water flats" of Lawndale to the high-rise jungle of Cabrini-Green. But by the generosity of the Servites at the Blessed Sacrament parish, I made it. Comments: Greetings again, fellow Gaels. First, a reminder that our 2007 banquet is scheduled for Friday, April 27, 2007, same time, same place. Go to the "banquet" page for more info, and online reservation form. Second, as you can see, over the past 18 months, we've done a great amount to this Guestbook, to stay ahead of the "SPAMBOTS," and their evil and unscrupulous "BotMasters." With all we've done, we have eliminated our SPAMMING problem. During these past 18 months, however, there have been a number of occasions, where the page either didn't function at all, or only partially functioned, thus posting incomplete entries. If you've encountered these issues, we're sorry, and can only offer that we we've resolved this problem.
